Slow moving low pressure was centered over the Lower Hudson Valley early this morning. A pocket of cold air in the upper levels of the atmosphere will move over the region during the day today associated with a strong upper level disturbance that has impacted the region for most of the week. The end result will be any sunshine this morning and afternoon bringing bubble up showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storm activity may be associated with small hail thanks to the abnormally cold temperatures aloft. Activity should diminish with the setting of the sun and subsequent loss of surface heating.
Both surface and upper level low pressure features move well north and east of the region by Saturday, and thus, a drying trend in the weather is forecast to begin and last through the bulk of the weekend. This will be short lived however as another frontal boundary approaches the region from the north by the early portions of the new work week. This boundary is forecast to stall in the vicinity of the Immediate Capital Region and oscillate north/south through midweek as ripples of low pressure form and ride along it. Thus, a return to unsettled weather looks to be in offing once again. Despite the unsettled weather next week, the general flow pattern is forecast to turn to the southwest, which should allow for some sunshine and an increase in temperatures. Of course, any sunshine will lead to the increased risk of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours with the stalled out boundary lurking in the vicinity.
Temperatures should average near to slightly above average, with precipitation also near to slightly above average through the entire period.
