The commercial is all over television to take care of your dog so they do not get the depleting and sometimes fatal disease, Parvo. Inspite of some of the best care, it is possible that your doggy may have contracted it before they got to you.
Parvo Transmission Parvo is transmitted by unvaccinated dogs coming into contact with infected dogs, infected stool (the virus is shed in stool) or an infected environment such as a kennel. Dogs that have recovered from Parvo (and show no symptoms) can continue to shed the virus periodically in their feces.
“Maybe it is a bad case of worms,” the vet said, “at the worst it is cancer. Only a few days away from home to be tested will tell.” We were all immediately grief stricken, my family and me, just for Bear not to be coming home with us, let alone the fact that he may be very very sick. Bear was our angel, our guardian our playmate, a central part of our family life.
Parvo Progress The Parvo virus is ingested and makes its way into the blood stream and into the rapidly-dividing cells of the body including the lining of the intestines. In the intestines, it can destroy various cells causing diarrhea and upset and allowing bacteria to invade the rest of the body.
We bought him from an ‘unemployed/on strike’ postal worker way back then, who could not afford the puppy shots and care they needed. He gave Bear to us at half the cost, because he said the puppy would probably be coming home with a belly of worms.
The new puppy also limped, the postal worker’s wife had back out of the driveway in her car into the little puppy. I asked my daughters if they were sure this is the one they wanted more than once, they screamed, “yes.” In the box he went and home with us he came.
My son slept in the basement with him all those first few noisy, whimpering nights until Bear becaame used to us and not being with his own doggy family any more. My daughters played ‘dress up’ with him, my son slept with him in his room and rubbed his belly while he watched television, and my husband fed and watered hime and I took Bear on long hikes in the woods every day. We felt helpless, we watned Bear to feel better again and please not die.
Vaccinations Puppies can receive some antibody protection (although this can be weak) from the mother. This protection is limited and can, oddly, interfere with Parvo vaccinations, articularly in areas where Parvo is prevalent, puppies need to be kept away from strange dogs and environments (dog parks, kennels) until they have completed the entire course of vaccinations. By that time, the maternal protection has abated and the administered antibody is working. There are several known strains of Parvo. Currently, the most effective vaccinations appear to be the live versions (weakened version of the virus itself) which should cover all the known strains.
When we brought Bear home it was one of the best days in our lives. But the vet’s diagnosis was not a good one. Only time would tell if Bear would make it or not, we felt helpless.
The vet realizing our love for our beloved pet and family member said to us, “There is one thing that you can do for him. Show him that you love him, give him the will to live again. So many dogs die because thier owners do not come back for their pets, fearing the disease and the care the dog will need to recover: the dogs feel abandoned and no longer loved, they lose the fight to stay alive.”
Bear was terrible sick for a couple weeks, but we treated him like royalty, he got double the love. In fact we all fought over who got to sped time with him next, even if it was only just sitting by his side in the same room with him.
Yes, Bear recovered, Bear survived and he lived, oh boy did he.
Parvo Symptoms High fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, depression, dehydration and severe and bloody diarrhea. In the most severe, and rare cases, puppies can have sudden heart failure. Parvo symptoms mimic other viral bowel diseases including Canine Coronavirus. Blood and stool work must be conducted in order to confirm Parvo.
