January 29, 2009, President Barack Obama, only 9 days into his presidency signs first bill into law. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a law to ensure equal pay to women by resetting the 180 day statute of limitations to file discriminatory lawsuit against an employer with each new discriminatory paycheck and not the initial discriminatory paycheck of a female’s unequal pay in question. On March 30, 2010, President Barack Obama signed into law, Health Care Reform of 2010. This law would reform the private health industry market, provide better coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, improving prescription drug coverage in Medicare and extending the Medicare life fund by at least 12 years. These are laws that many Republican leaders donot favor and are laws passed before GOP controlled the House in late 2010.
Here are events in June 2011 that reflect a more conservative signature.
On the morning of Friday, June 24, 2011 in Tampa, 150 members of NOW ( National Organization for Women) marched in protest to within 300 yards outside of (R) Marco Rubio’s Tampa office. Their claim is his proposal to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in the 2012 budget in their words is a ” war against women.”
This protest follows a separate incident of The U.S. Supreme Court ruling Monday, June 20, 2011 in favor of Wal-Mart’s sex discrimination case filed by 1.5 million current and former female employees. The conservative vote of the Supreme Court was 5-4 in favor of Wal-Mart because the women had not proven they had suffered from a common policy of discrimination.
Friday June 24, 2011, in Tallahassee a state legislative panel rejected millions of federal grant money to assist patients transitions from nursing homes to their own homes with similar care, such as home health care provisions.
Due to the fact the money would be from the Health Care Reform Law, the governor stated he could not accept any portion of federal grant money set aside for the health care law because it would go against the policy of the conservative run Florida legislation. Yet, Gov. Rick Scott had no problem accepting secretive incentive money for two undisclosed businesses considering relocating to Florida according to St. Petersburg Times.
Are these isolated cases or is there a method to this insanity? Growth seems to be the elusive factor, cut and spend has never worked without growth. Growth is not borrowing or granting generous tax cuts to those who don’t need them while squeezing the life out of middle and lower class citizens, a practice of GOP. GOP has yet to have an administration to produce a surplus in the federal budget, while Democrats have achieved a surplus several times, but spent the surplus accumulated by their party. G.W.Bush spent the remaining surplus on 2 wars and a bail out after Bill Clinton managed to preserve and increase it.
It is extremely irresponsible to have governed in this manner for decades and no party is exempt from the horrendous behavior that American citizens have and still accept as a representation of the people.
Now there are women, men, children, elderly, young, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, poor and disabled Americans hanging in suspension because of greed or those too inept to show a firmness of purpose for what democracy should truly represent.
