In light of the black ops growing popularity of Call of Duty: Black Ops and the newly released Modern Warfare 3 teaser trailer, I felt the need to give some readers an insight to why Modern Warfare 3 is going to suck.
The Call of duty franchise did not become popular until the first Modern Warfare developed by Infinity Ward. Next to Halo3, this was the game that started the craze of boring FPS games. Modern first person shooters lack any form of difficulty. It has become a prerequisite to have regenerating health as well as linear map design. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare gained popularity by showing the different side of Call of Duty. Modern Warfare was the first in the franchise to not be a WWII shooter. The multiplayer was also different by having “perks” customizing your character with abilities and weapons, like in the Rainbow Six series. Modern Warfare was an easy game, the regenerating health made the game easier and all you had to do is hide behind a rock, or a wall longer in the higher difficulty settings. Another trend Modern Warfare started was the hallway map design. The map would consist of long hallways of battles and cutscenes. After Modern Warfare gained attention, Treyarch created Call of Duty: World at War, yet another WWII shooter. World at War was essentially Modern Warfare in a different time period, but the game offered a new mode, Nazi Zombies. This is a horde based game mode where players are in building killing waves of zombies to get to the highest round. This is yet another multiplayer aspect, but video games should be able to stand on their own through single player rather than relying on the multiplayer crutch the predecessor had. World at War could not, because it was just a simple rehash of Modern Warfare.
A long anticipated sequel to Modern Warfare was released soon after World at War, Modern Warfare 2. It was a commercial success, many gamers are dedicated to the new Call of Duty series and it seems that they like less content. You can’t blame Treyarch and Infinity Ward for continuing to make these watered down FPS games. Clearly the games are selling, so there must be nothing to improve on. This of course is wrong. Modern Warfare 2 was nothing different. Oh goody people are selling out 60 bucks for a game they previously bought. Clearly Infinity Ward and Treyarch are having the last laugh. Modern Warfare 2 is the same as the previous games. Same map design, same textures, simply put, it is the original Modern Warfare with a 2 on the end.
Modern Warfare 3 was recently announced and I guarantee you, the game will be the same as the previous games. I know this because it is clear Infinity Ward does not intend on changing their formula, they have no reason to (other than gaining a bigger fanbase by not developing only half a video game).
