Have you ever wondered where to go for a nice hike or run in the woods without having to travel for hours in the car? Are your children complaining about how bored they are and wondering what they can do? Well all you really need to do is to look just north of Appleton on County A (Lynndale Drive) and venture into Bubolz Nature Preserve. What once started as a potato farm has been transformed into a wilderness sanctuary where by just walking on one of the many trails you can see wildlife from deer to snakes to frogs and experience the amazing plants and trees that are native to the area.
Bubolz is open to the public year-round and also free (donations are welcome) and with just over 775 acres of pristine wilderness, it makes for an amazing day trip in any season of the year. Bubolz boasts 8.5 miles of trails through prairies, forests and along side ponds where one can enjoy a leisurely walk or run or even cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. There is also a nice shaded picnic area as well as a gazebo to take advantage for that summer picnic or a nice cup winter hot chocolate after a day of snowshoeing. Be aware though, pets, bicycles and smoking are not permitted in the preserve.
Bubolz also has an amazing nature center with multiple programs scheduled throughout the year including anything from documentary screenings to guided nature hikes and even making maple syrup in the springtime. Many of the programs are free but make sure to check out the event calendar for information about any fees or registration guidelines.
Bubolz is a non-profit, independently run preserve so volunteers are greatly appreciated. If you aren’t able to volunteer but would still like to be a part of the Bubolz family, you can become a member. Since Bubolz is an independently run facility, they do not receive government funding so your membership and donations are directly impacting the sustainability and future of the preserve.
Bubolz is an amazing place to enjoy a nice day “away” from the city with family and friends no matter what season it is: enjoy the a steamy Summer day with a nice picnic in the shade, look at the amazing colors of the leaves with an Autumn hike, watch the birds return in Spring or rent snowshoes from the nature center and explore Wisconsin in all its Winter glory. Whatever your forte is, Bubolz will be able to cater to your outdoor exploration so make sure you head out and enjoy all that nature has to offer.
