May 13, The Boston Breakers (2-4-0) fell 3-2 to Western New York Flash at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, New York. Both teams were handicapped by the loss of national team players preparing for the World Cup, but other players compensated. McCall Zerboni featured in three of Western NY’s four goals and Liz Bogus stepped up for Boston when they were two goals down.
Last summer, Bogus played a big role in the Breakers’ mid-summer turnaround from being the team that couldn’t win to one of the most dangerous teams in WPS.
Brittany Bock scored for the Flash in the 10th minute, assisted by McCall Zerboni. Zerboni scored the first of her two goals 15 minutes later assisted by Kim Brandao. Bogus cut the deficit in half in the 38th minute with a header assisted by Nikki Washington. Zerboni scored again in the 60th minute assisted by Gemma Davidson and Kasey Moore converted a penalty in the 80th minute.
“I’m disappointed in some of our players’ efforts,” said Boston coach Tony DiCicco. “I told the players this was a game we should’ve got a result in. All in all, we failed in this game. You have to have a fighting spirit in this league. It’s the ability to fight and work really hard that are important in this league.
We played a pretty good second half, but you can’t come back twice from two goals down.”
Saturday evening at 6:30, four Boston Breakers – Stephanie Cox, Rachel Buehler, Amy LePeilbet, and Lauren Cheney – feature for the U.S. Women’s National Team versus Japan on Fox Soccer Channel.
