A recent brunch at Bar Agricole made my heart melt. A family brunch, we were welcomed with two children by the generous, experienced servers. We admired the inviting bar menu of brunch cocktails. However, stuck with the Blue Bottle espresso drinks.
My daughter ordered the beignets, after hearing that they are like doughnuts. Not a typical New Orleans beignet, these were definitely fluffy interior and doughnut hole exterior. The cinnamon sugar gave these a homespun flavor. Floating atop whipped cream, this was a bit dessert-like. No one minded. They were finished with smiles and my daughter enjoyed calling this breakfast.
The crepes, layered with simple creme anglaise and baby crepes into a tall, slicer cake was a sight to behold. With a crunchy sugar brule topping, cherry sauce and hazelnuts, I was in heaven with this tall treat. This was a dish for my memory bank. I need to recreate this. For the record, I am a crepe lover. If I stumble upon a crepe restaurant, I will try it. Everyone does crepes differently. Thin and crispy. Thin and spongy. Thick and doughy. Browned, blond. There are different ways this is done. These were done blond, in the French style. Thin and perfectly spongy. I actually prefer crispy. However, these are perfect for a layered tall cake. Structure is nice for this plating. The cherry sauce was sweet and tangy. Hazelnuts were perfectly toasted. I just loved it.
My husband had the pork belly sandwich. It was fantastic. My kids loved this one. We had a lemon-poppy seed scone that was of the cream variety. My daughter and I pilfered this from my father-in-law. I liked it. They served it with a fresh orange jam. Yes, please. It was yummy.
Brandon Jew (Magnolia veteran) has a polished menu featuring local, biodynamic farm ingredients. Working with an outdoor herb garden, it just doesn’t get more wholesome. I love what they are doing here. Showcasing this bar style menu, find New Orleans-inspired items in food and drink. Make a reservation, this has been written up everywhere. I have to go back for dinner.
