Studio 921 Salon and Medi Dayspa in Federal Hill is going local with its new renovations. A freshly completed $200,000 investment put in new floors opened up the salon space and added cabinetry throughout, featuring works by local artist Jonathan Maxwell. Trained here in the city at M.I.C.A in painting, his art is superb, custom furniture and lighting crafted with salvaged metal from industries in Baltimore. It’s graceful and adds sleek glamour while drawing on local vision and materials. Much of the other renovation work was done by award winning Merritt Properties. “As a small local business, we try to use local contractors for everything,” says Judy Sulisufaj Kelly of Studio 921.
Taking a closer look at the spa services, Judy mentions that Studio 921 has a lot people come in for therapeutic treatment of ailments and chronic pain. Baltimore City comes in 20th in fitness according to a recent study, and that means there are plenty of bicyclists, runners, climbers, soccer players, and weekend warriors who need to maintain their bodies with massage work. Studio 921 Dayspa has therapists who are used to working with clients who are active. This really is the place to go for your chronic sports injuries. They pride themselves in their work with athletes. They offer Thai and prenatal massage, as well as great packages for men like the Men’s VIP that includes a manicure, a Swedish massage, and a facial all for $100. That is a good deal.
Also their signature services include expertise with blondeing techniques. From highlights to full-on platinum, the cast of stylists at Studio 921 are confident in their perfect technique. Their Papaya Pineapple Grape seed Body Scrub also sounds nice, as does the results-driven Epicuren enzyme peel facial. While pricey, they are indubitably top-notch. They serve bridal parties, and other events expertly. One could confidently book makeup, nails, hair, facials, and massage all-in-one. For the environmentally conscious, the organic line they carry is Neuma, which is a plant-based hair and beauty product line.
Businesses are choosing to go local, but are taking advantage of new national media to bring in customers. With new advertising devices like Livingsocial and Groupon affecting the ability of a single local business to attract customers in a flash, there are downsides to the windfall. Studio 921 had some negative Yelp reviews that focused on the way Groupon coupons were dealt with. The really positive aspects of the business speak for themselves, but some customers were unable to experience all that Studio 921 has to offer with so many redeeming the coupons at one time.
“Working with Groupon has been bittersweet…it is a great way to bring new clients into our salon and spa that we may not have attracted on our own, however, we do find some people have no intention of returning and just jump from Groupon to Groupon, ” Judy remarked.
She said that they are currently negotiating a Groupon for their Medi-spa for a laser treatment. It’s still worth it for them to use the group coupon system.
They are having an open house June 10th from 4-6 PM. There you can enjoy demos of their laser treatments and massage services, light food, and drink. They will have a prize drawing giveaway for a laser treatment.
