‘Bad Teacher’ is exactly what you think it is. It is a one note comedy that makes no apologies for being so. Cameron Diaz plays Elizabeth Halsey, a teacher who hates her job, has a potty mouth, and has no respect for any of her colleagues. After being dumped by her fiance, Elizabeth is forced to stay on at her school after having already put in her resignation, leaving her even more jaded. That is until she meets the new substitute (Justin Timberlake), she devises a plan to get him, while being persued by the gym teacher (Jason Segel). Let the mayhem begin.
I felt a relation to ‘Bad Teacher’ because I know a group of teachers in my neighborhood of North Las Vegas, NV who teach at a notoriously rough school. Usually in movies you see how bad these types of students are and how the teacher is out to transform them. well this part of North Las Vegas can be just as hard as these neighborhoods and I have seen how they unwind after the transforming of these students at the end of the day. ‘Bad Teacher’ goes to extremes to show an unhappy teacher, but relatable none the less.
‘Bad Teacher’ isn’t as funny as it tries to be, making the same types of jokes over and over again (we get it, she hates her job), but the funniest parts of ‘Bad Teacher’ are laugh out loud hilarious. There aren’t a lot of these moments, but enough of them.
Cameron Diaz gives a fearless performance, not a care in the world of what anyone thinks of her, and it is fun to watch her in this mode. Also, there is supporting work that is definitely worth mentioning here. Justin Timberlake has a few very funny moments, Lucy Punch as Amy Squirrel and Phyllis Smith as Lynn Davies give very polished performances as Elizabeth’s co-workers who turn out to be her foe and friend respectively. But the stand out here is Jason Segel, not because he is the flashiest actor or even the best, but because he is the real heart of the film. Always with a trusting and playful disposition, Segel comes across as the most genuine person in ‘Teacher’.
Not a great film by far, but fun and relatable to most, ‘Bad Teacher’ is a GO SEE IT!
I will keep working for you
