It’s beginning to look a lot like back-to-school time. I walked into Target the week of July 4th and everywhere I turned there were school supplies and dorm necessities. Now it’s pervasive. And in the school supply aisle there are lists for each school so parents can get all the correct items.
Along with the paper and pencils that are on those lists, I would encourage you to begin preparing for the new school year with prayer.
Along with the list of supplies, supply yourself with a list of the teachers and administrators at the school. By now you should also know in whose class your child/children will be this year. Don’t know yet? Contact the school. Once you have all these names on your list, it becomes your new prayer list – your back-to-school prayer list.
Why should you begin now? and why should you pray for the teachers and administrators? You wouldn’t send your child to school without the correct supplies and you wouldn’t wait until the first day of school to get them, right? Then why would you wait until the school year begins to pray for those who will lead the school and teach your child?
How to pray? Well, the Bible says you have not because you ask not… so ask for what you want:
Administrators: for wisdom and fairness
Custodians: for energy and the supplies to do their job
Teachers (in general): to return to the classroom filled with enthusiasm and great ideas
Support staff (secretaries and other non-teaching staff): that they have the information and training and patience they need to do what is required of them
Teachers (specific to your child): that he/she will be caring and fair, that he/she will respect the students and be worthy of their respect; that he/she will focus on teaching the children the academics and also model good personal skills…
Bus companies: that they will lbe getting the buses serviced and inspected, and that the bus drivers are trained and ready, so that the school year wil be a safe one.
Students: pray that they are having fun and enjoying these last weeks of vacation; pray that they will return to the classrooms ready to learn; pray that transitions to new schools or to new teachers will go smoothly
Get the idea? Think of all the things that need to be done before the school year and begin to pray for them now. Think of all the things you want to happen during the school year and pray for them now.
As you pray, remember to pray for the things that are good and beneficial, and of course that God will show you the things you need to pray about. Above all we want His will, because He does know what is best.
Oh – and here are some special thoughts for those of you who are about to send a student off to college: you won’t know the specific professors, but you can pray for the professors they will have. You can pray for/about roommates and safety and all the other things that your child will be facing. Freshman student? Pray about the transition and that he/she will assimilate into college life smoothly. Again, you know your child and what he/she will need. Pave the way wth prayer.
Are you a home schooling family? Start now to undergird the school year with prayer as well: pray that you (and other parents if you are in a co-op schooling situation) will find the energy and patience to be good teachers, and that you will find interesting and effecive ways to present information. Pray for the things that concern you most.
Begin now, prepare for back-to-school and enjoy the weeks before classes start. Find time as a family to do some fun things. And spend some time in prayer for your children and for those who will be teaching them this fall. In fact you can begin praying with your children about the new school year – find out what is concerning them about the coming term and pray with them about it.
Over the next few weeks, continue to set aside time for these prayers. And next time I’ll be sharing an idea for during the school year.
Let me know your thoughts!
