4 ways to spend less on gas so you can keep saving
Everyone is feeling the pinch of high gas prices, but that doesn’t mean you have to put off saving for your dreams. You may need to cut back on something in your budget to make up for it, but it doesn’t need to be saving for that trip to Paris. Whether it’s a vacation, retirement or a down payment to buy a house, it’s time to get creative so you can keep the light on at the end of the tunnel.
If you value making your dreams come true more than the way you get around town, here are four ways to spend less on gas so you can keep saving:
- Join the helmeted masses in Austin. In honor of May being Bike Month, the Austin Chronicle published a guide with resources to learn about bicycling in Austin, a map of bike routes, a calendar of local events and a list of bike shops.
- Plug-in. 2011 may be the year of the electric car with major car manufacturers unveiling relatively affordable models for the first time. You can get around gasoline-free for even less with electric scooters, bicycles and motorcycles. As a bonus, you can get hundreds of dollars back with the Austin Energy Alternative Fuel Vehicles Incentives program.
- Go public. It’s not New York City, but Austin does have a way to get lots of people around the city for only $2. Maybe it’s time to finally find out where the wheels on the bus go.
- Share. When driving a car is the only way, you can still keep your costs low. All you need to know is what you learned in kindergarten–that sharing is nice. Besides traditional carpooling, we’re lucky enough to have two car sharing programs in Austin, car2go and Zipcar. Both programs include gas, insurance and over 100 miles for less than $15 per hour and application/membership fees under $50. If you want to rouse parking envy downtown by fitting into spots that no one else can, try car2go to find out why the smart car is the darling of European cities. Need more options? Zipcar offers a variety of vehicles including trucks and status cars.
By giving your car a rest, you can continue saving money for what’s really important to you.
