“But I don’t want to go among mad people!”
“Oh, you can’t help that. We’re all mad here.”
So goes the famous conversation between Alice and the Cheshire cat in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. And, indeed, everyone seems to be mad there, especially in Alice: Madness Returns the long awaited sequel to the original American McGee’s Alice game. Alice, finally loosed from the asylum of the first game, is all grown up. However, like any survivor of a tragedy, she is still haunted by the terrible memories of the day her parents died. Determined to face her past, Alice returns to Wonderland, ready to confront her fears, but the once bright kingdom has been changed into a terrifying realm of nightmares. As insanity threatens to swallow up both her and Wonderland, Alice must rush to discover the reason for Wonderland’s horrific change.
Containing brand new weapons, levels, enemies, and game mechanics while still maintaining the unique art style of the first game, Madness Returns is an excellent addition to the series. According to Spicy Horse Games’ co-founder, American McGee, “Spicy Horse is proud to bring players back to the beautiful yet dark world we have created for Alice. The team has gone to great lengths to make sure that both fans of the franchise and newcomers alike will find themselves eager to tumble down the rabbit hole again thanks to an immersive story and distinctive art style.”
The game is currently available for purchase in North America on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles for $59.99, as well as the PC for $49.99. It can also be purchased online through http://www.ea.com/alice.
