The 16-year-old that prompted Steven Tyler to proclaim that she was “The One” after the Nashville auditions just might be in serious jeopardy of being eliminated from “American Idol” in fourth place. Jimmy Iovine criticized Lauren Alaina for holding back in last week’s performance of “Unchained Melody” and judge Jennifer Lopez told Ellen Degeneres this week that she was just waiting for Lauren to break out of her shell. It is that reluctance that puts her in unsafe territory. And if power rankings put out by TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly, and Idolator are any indication, she’s a goner.
Lauren Alaina finished last week in the Bottom 2, the first time she has ended up in that position. After 60 million votes, Jacob Lusk was the lowest vote receiver and ended the show by singing his farewell song. No one knows how many votes separated the contestants or whether or not Lauren is separated from the next least vote-getter by a few votes or an insurmountable number. Regardless, her good and passable performances have begun to take their toll on her support, especially when James Durbin and Scotty McCreery continue to dominate the performances, with dark horse Haley Reinhart making a run in the final stretch of the competition.
All three of the aforementioned power rankings lists puts the teenager in the trailing position. Both TV Guide and Idolator place James Durbin at the top of their lists, with Entertainment Weekly giving the top spot to Scotty McCreery.
EW’s power list doesn’t stop there with being a little different. They also believe Haley Reinhart, on the back of that standing ovation-generating “House of the Rising Sun” Top 5 performance, has moved into second place. Haley places third in the other two listings.
This week, Lauren and her fellow “American Idol” finalists will choose songs from the Leiber & Stoller Songbook (“Stuck In The Middle With You,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “On Broadway,” “Stand By Me,” “Hound Dog,” etc.). It appears that the Georgia teen has her work cut out for her, but if there is one thing that reality talent shows have proven over the years, it is that they can sometimes be unpredictable. And who knows, maybe a little help from this week’s mentor, Lady Gaga, will help her have that break out moment that everyone seems to be waiting for.
Lauren Alaina fans in the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina can watch her performances on “American Idol” on WFXB TV on Wednesday. Results of the voting will be broadcast live from Hollywood Thursday evening.
