Let’s keep it short and sweet tonight since next week will be the American Idol Top 3 extravaganza, which should entail a much longer recap. Four contestants, two songs each—one from the Leiber & Stoller songbook (you’re like “wtf is that?!”) and one that falls under the category of “Songs That Inspire.” Awww…poor Jacob Lusk missed out! No individual performance reviews this time, just a minute-by-minute (and hopefully entertaining) commentary in real time. By the way, this week’s mentor is none other than the zany & fabulous Lady Gaga. Set list for the contestants listed below!
James Durbin: Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” Haley Reinhart: Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” Scotty McCreery: Alan Jackson’s “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” Lauren Alaina: Martina McBride’s “Anyway” Haley Reinhart: Shirley Bassey’s “I (Who Have Nothing)” Scotty McCreery: The Coasters’ “Young Blood” Lauren Alaina: Elvis Presley’s “Trouble” James Durbin: The Clovers’ “Love Potion No. 9″
8:00 Oh Hell… They just had to open with this frickin P. Diddy song and a montage showcasing all the past Idols: everyone from people that matter (like Carrie Underwood) to well, people like Taylor Hicks.
8:04 Who’s Leiber & Stoller? Say what now?
8:08 “Don’t Stop Believin” is now officially ruined, James. Thanks for that. Just for the record, I not only stopped believing you, I actually stopped listening… like weeks ago.
8:15 Haley seems to really be channeling some MJ right now. The song is preachy but if we’re talking about songs that inspire, she nails it.
8:17 I spy Casey Abrams in the audience rooting for his big time crush! Oh no…the judges are not making sense again. Why does J. Lo and Randy hate Haley so much!?!?
8:19 Haley finally sticks up for herself. FINALLY. I give mad props to this girl coz she’s been trying to be respectful even though these judges seem to have lost their minds (just like the writers over at a show called Gossip Girl.)
8:27 I really miss playing the fiddle. I remember hearing this song for the first time after 9/11 and it literally brought me to tears. Brilliant song choice. I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes it in the top 3 or– top 2 for that matter.
8:38 You had a good start Lauren. But then the song got bigger and swallowed you whole. I still think you did better than James– but not better than Haley. And J. Lo needs to shut up and just sit there to look pretty.
8:42 To prove he is the biggest douchebag of them all, Randy names a 3-way tie among Scotty, Lauren, and James in tonight’s first round of songs. Wow. If I were Haley, I would have thrown my shoe at him hard enough to poke out his eye.
8:48 Time to go Gaga!!! Wow. She is soooo crazy weird. Two-toned hair. Big fake mole. She even encourages Haley to go a little psycho—not on the judges though, just her song.
8:52 Haley is FIERCE.
8:53 J. Lo and Randy try to make up for all the crap-tastic advice and commentary they gave Haley during her first performance. Oh Haley, bless your heart for not flicking off the judges right now.
9:00 How is it that Gaga is the first to acknowledge Scotty’s very weird habit of singing into the mic sideways?
9:04 J. Lo mutters more useless information. I enjoyed her much more when she would cry about cutting contestants.
9:12 Lauren finally finds her inner, “evil” diva with some coaxing from Gaga. But I fear it’s a little too late?
9:14 Maybe I just really hate J. Lo tonight but… her hair looks really whack. It’s all circa 1985?
9:20 We’re introduced to Stoller of Leiber & Stoller. Yeah… he’s really old. Apparently, Leiber is under the weather and couldn’t make it. I’m convinced he’s just enjoying bingo night at his nursing home.
9:22 Oh Gaga… don’t touch James Durbin’s hips. Ew… gross.
9:23 Omg I think I’ve gone crazy as well—I actually likedthat performance. God, I think this fool is actually gonna make top 3 based on that song alone. SMH
9:28 I honestly think either Lauren or Haley will get cut—which is unfortunate because I don’t think James Durbin deserves to be in the finale. Sigh.
Tune in tomorrow at 8pm on FOX to find out who will compete in the finale next week!
