American Idol fans with remotes in hand on Wednesday night might have wondered what tv show they accidentally tuned in to. As the top five fought to become the top four, gone were any indications that Scotty McCreery had ever just sat on a stool and sung safe ballads. Gone were the memories of Scotty wooing girls through the tv camera with his deep, luring voice. Gone were any judges wavering comments. Because Scotty was most certainly in the house performing Montgomery Gentry’s Gone.
If you had never seen Scotty perform before, you wouldn’t have to wonder where this Scotty came from. It seems that with only four spots left, Scotty dug deep and broke out of that comfort zone because he totally owned the stage. This side of Scotty McCreery, this leaping, pointing, bending down on one knee, imaginary gun popping, vocally aggressive Scotty made you forget that this guy is only seventeen years old. With the mastery of stage presence of a seasoned star, Scotty exploded on the American Idol stage and staked his claim to the Idol title. After that performance, even more St. Louisans could begin to envision him tearing up the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater stage during the summer concert series.
Combined with his moving rendition of Always On My Mind, made famous by Willie Nelson, will this new side of Scotty McCreery gain him the respect of the country community at large and have a whole new stampede of fans rushing to vote for him? Scotty will find out who moves on tonight as he waits for the Idol results while enjoying a country act that has most definitely already “made it.” 2011 five-time Grammy winning group Lady Antebellum will perform, surely making it impossible to believe that American Idol previously rejected lead singer Hillary Scott not just once but twice. Thankfully, they didn’t make the same mistake with Scotty.
American Idol airs on St. Louis’ Fox station KTVI at 7:00 p.m. Central. Tune in to find out if Scotty McCreery once again saved himself from being “gone.”
