‘American Idol’ 2011: What we already know about the winner — Although the final performances are not until tonight on FOX’s popular show American Idol, there is a lot we already know about the eventual winner of Season 10’s contest.
First, we know the winner will be an American teenager. Both of the finalists — Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina — are still in their teens. Scotty McCreery is 17; Lauren Alaina is just 16. If she should win, she would be the youngest winner in the show’s history. Lauren Alaina’s entry into the competition this season is a result of Season 10’s change in the rules. Beginning just this season, American Idol starting allowing 15-year-olds to audition. Show officials said this was to take advantage of the “Justin Bieber” effect of younger singers lately making an impact on popular music.
Secondly, we know that this year’s winner will be a Southerner. Scotty McCreery hails from Garner, North Carolina whereas Lauren Alaina is from Rossville, Georgia. Southern singers have typically placed well on American Idol. Fantasia Barrino was from North Carolina, for example, as was Season Two runner-up, Clay Aiken. Season Four runner up to Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice, is from Alabama as is Season Two winner, Ruben Studdard. Many more successful singers on the show came from Southeastern or Southern border states as well.
We also know that more people voted to put Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina in the finals than in any previous semi-final in the show’s history. Over 95 million votes — nearly 1/3 of the country’s population if there were only one vote per person (which there isn’t) — were cast last week, the biggest vote for any non-finale performance show ever.
Of course, we also know that the singer who wins this year will likely seek a career in country music. Nashville probably already has both of these singers’ numbers on speed-dial, and it will be a race to see which one scores a country deal first. Lauren Alaina may also flirt with pop and crossovers, but more of her chosen songs on the show have been from the country genre. Scotty McCreery, of course, has made it known from the beginning where his heart is in the music industry.
So, which of these teenaged, country-singing, Southern living, popular American kids will be the next American Idol? The viewing public will find that out this week. Tuesday night FOX is airing an early performance show (it used to be on Wednesdays), starting at 8 p.m. ET. The results finale show (usually an extravaganza not to be missed by pop music and Idol fans) will air on Wednesday night from 8 to 10 p.m. ET.
