‘American Idol’ 2011: Could ‘Idol’ have an all-country final? — Both the contestants on American Idol and the viewers at home will know in a matter of hours which two singers have made it through to the finals next week. Season 10 is winding down, with its finale scheduled for May 26, 2011. The Top Three singers competed last night with three songs each. Two of the three are teenaged country singers — will Idol have an all-country final? Could it?
If one believes that Twitter will predict the eventual winner, then an all-country final may very well be in the cards. The number of Twitter followers for Scotty McCreery has been the highest all season; Lauren Alaina is currently in second place with followers. Haley Reinhart, on the other hand, has been low on the Twitter count for much of the season but has managed to make it through round after round.
If mishaps are counted as a negative (and no one is saying they are or should be), then that might also mean Haley Reinhart would go home Thursday night. She fell during her performance Wednesday while dancing her way back on-stage after performing a bit of her song behind the judges’ table. However, it was Lauren Alaina who had the singing “mishap,” according to the judges. A change in modulation in the song came up on her quicker than she realized, they said, when she seemed momentarily lost or distracted. The judges lauded both singers for their quick recoveries of mishaps.
With few exceptions (Carrie Underwood being one of them), American Idol has tended, over its previous nine seasons, to favor pop singers over country singers. That would make having a double country final a hard hill to climb. Many observers think Scotty McCreery, with his steady, solid performances week after week, has a lock on a spot in the finals. If that is true, with his decidedly country orientation, that might make a spot for fellow country crooner Lauren Alaina more challenging. Viewers may want to see two different styles face off next week.
What do you think? Could American Idol actually have an all-country final showdown this season? One of the ironies of this were it to happen, of course, would be that one of the new judges, Steven Tyler, is a veteran rocker and member of the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame. His popularity on the show with viewers this season may have a sway in the vote. That would give Haley Reinhart a shot at balancing the finale’s performances.
