High pressure will remain in control to start our workweek, with a gradual warming trend into midweek as summer makes a brief comeback. An isolated shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out, especially on Tuesday afternoon, but a strong cold front will approach by Thursday with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be on the stronger side.
Here is the complete forecast for Albany and the Capital Region of upstate New York:
TODAY – After some patchy fog in the early morning, skies will become mostly sunny as a ridge of high pressure continues to build into the region. High temperatures will reach the upper 70’s to near 80 degrees with a light north wind. A widely isolated pop-up shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out this afternoon.
TUESDAY – The heat and humidity will begin to increase and a piece of short wave energy will ride over the top of the upper level ridge and into the region by afternoon with an isolated shower or thunderstorm possible once again. High temperatures will reach the mid 80’s with a light southwest wind and a gradual increase in humidity throughout the day.
WEDNESDAY – The heat will really start to build as the upper level ridge takes firm control over the region. High temperatures will reach the lower 90’s under mostly sunny skies and it should remain dry due to a strong cap on the environment. Humidity levels will be high as well so it will be extremely uncomfortable to be outside.
OUTLOOK – By Thursday, the southwest flow will increase ahead of an approaching cold front and high temperatures will soar into the mid 90’s under mostly sunny skies. The hot temperatures combined with rather uncomfortable dew point levels will make it feel rather sultry and heat advisories may be needed for the afternoon hours. As the cold front approaches and slices into the warm and humid air, showers and thunderstorms will break out late in the day and into the evening, with a strong or severe thunderstorm also possible. This will have to be monitored closely as the time approaches. A few lingering showers may persist into Friday morning as the front drops south, but clearing should occur into the afternoon with high temperatures around 80 degrees. A rather pleasant air mass will then settle into the region for next weekend with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid to upper 70’s combined with lower humidity values.
