Iced Jamb

a plus sized sun dress that finally fits

by iced jamb

OOH! it’s so hot outside! For most women, that means wearing less clothing, or cooler clothing — maybe a sun dress. But if you are a grown woman, you might have noticed lately that most of the really cute sun dresses are cut for…well….teenage girls who haven’t quite developed. Too often, the bottom fits, but the top is….skimpy, to say the least. While some women like that look, it’s not really appropriate for most of to wear anyplace other than the beach or pool. If you get a larger size so the top covers your bra (not to mention the rest of your chest), often the armholes are too long, or the dress just looks baggy. If you are a plus-size or have an ample chest, the situation is even worse. To wear a sun dress, you’ve got to wear a tank or tee under it (and that sort of ruins the idea of a spare, cooling garment).

However, help is here from a source you might not normally think of (but don’t discount them): plus-sized brands. For example, the plus size fashion brand called “Woman Within,” offers a new, ‘comfort strap dress collection’ featuring beautiful summer dresses made with elasticized shoulder straps that actually are designed to conceal the bra strap and stay in place for long-wearing comfort! They have four, sleeveless styles, featuring comfortable, soft, easy to wear, cotton/spandex summer fabrics. Prices range from $34.99 to $39.99

If you are actually a plus size, you’ll be happy to know that Roamans cares enough to create clothing that is stylish, but if you actually aren’t a plus size, no one will know you got your cute dress through a plus-size store. It just looks like a cute sun dress that actually fits, for a change. I like style #: 0005-96500-1333 (photo). It is covered up just a bit more on top ( you’ll show less cleavage, but you won’t “fall out” of it either). The dress also has wider straps because “spaghetti” means wearing a strapless bra or constantly adjusting your bra straps (and I’m sorry, but the “bra strap showing” look doesn’t work for women, especially in public! The elastic also keeps the straps in place, so you’re not stuck fussing them them.

If you are NOT a plus size and you’re within the size range of 10-14 you can still wear this dress without feeling engulfed in it. The best thing about this dress? Not having to worry about showing too much or wearing a strapless bra for hours! This particular dress is 40” long and made of washable cotton/spandex knit. It is available in black, dark navy, olive, purple and gunmetal, in sizes medium to 6X. I tried the medium, and found that it was generously sized but not ridiculously so. And while the photo shows the elastic gathering at a high, empire waist, on me, the top part of my body isn’t all that big, so the elastic gathering fell lower, to just about to my waist. This dress is nicely made, but it is plain, so I accessorized it with a wide, colorful, woven belt (any wide belt or ribbon would work). It is a perfect “canvas” for scarves and statement jewelry, too. The cost is reasonable, the quality, good. Instead of worrying about the skirt clinging, the extra fabric on this one on my body gave it a 50’s style fullness that looks really cute!

So the next time you’re thinking about buying a Summer dress and you are getting tired of teen clothes that really are not for a woman’s body, don’t forget to check out the fashionable plus-sized options. Check out Womanwithin.com
