In a 33-29 vote, the New York State Senate passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage late Friday. New York will become the sixth state where gay couples can wed.
What cleared the way for the measure’s passage were exemptions made to religious organizations that would not be required to perform same sex marriages.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill at 11:55 PM and the law will go into effect in 30 days. That day will be July 24, a Sunday. Clear the calendars.
In a prepared statement, Mayor Bloomberg wrote: ” Today’s passage in the New York State Senate of legislation recognizing the right of couples to marry regardless of their gender is a historic triumph for equality and freedom. The passage of this bill is the culmination of a decades-long struggle for equality by gay and lesbian New Yorkers. Together, we have taken the next big step on our national journey toward a more perfect union.”
