Now that the summer is upon us, it is time to officially start wearing the goofy shorts, sleeveless shirts, flip flops, and of course, grab a nice beverage from our favorite watering hole.
Now for all the beer enthusiasts with your favorite heavy beers, it is time to trump that thought and start thinking lighter and sweeter tasting for the summer. That is why today we are going to go over three different summer drinks that will start off your experience right.
For the guys (and gals) looking for that simple beer taste, go with a Michelob Ultra. When it comes to beers where you do not want to add the weight on that comes with it, MU doesn’t lose its nice beer taste like a MGD 64 does. But your drinking experience should not just be limited to same ole bottle, can, or draft. You need to expand your horizons from just beer this summer and that is why two more drinks are on the way and, why not, let’s adds some recipes to boot.
Let’s start off with a Blue Hawaiian, which I am sure you can get at any of your local Memphis watering holes or you can make it in your own home bar. It is a three-part alcohol, one part non-alcohol, with one or two garnishes depending on what you have available at home or if you wish to have the bartender complete the drink in draping. A standard pint glass is fine and I suggest adding the ice first to go ahead and get a good eye on how much you are about to add.
- Start with ¾ of your favorite rum, ¾ Blue Curacao, and ¾ Creame de Coconut for the alcoholic portion of the drink. Then top it off with pineapple juice, roughly two ounces is fine for a nice smooth taste. You can go with a pineapple or maraschino cherry for the garnish and you have yourself a wonderful mixed summer drink that will make you feel fine. The fresher the pineapple juice the better.
Now this next drink is something I learned from a great bartender, named “Captain”, at TGI Friday’s Wolfchase (check it out). This drink is called a “Sex with the Captain”…yes, how appropriate. You can make this drink yourself or call the captain.
- You start with 1 ½ oz Captain Morgans’ Original Spiced Rum, then add 1 oz Amaretto Almond Liqueur and 1 oz Peach Schnapps. Top off with cranberry and orange juice, again keep it fresh with the juices for a smoother taste, and you have yourself something to keep you occupied. And as my girlfriend found out, one time with the captain was all she needed…wait, that didn’t sound right.
So there you have it, three great drinks to get yourself started with the summer, now that it is in full swing. I am going to go grab my batman swim trunks, a snorkel, and enjoy some boat time with my favorite drinks. What’s your summer story going to be?
