2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee: PA teen Sukanya Roy wins it all – photos — Sukanya Roy of South Abington Township, Pennsylvania beat out Canadian champion, Laura Newcombe, Thursday night to win it all at the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee held in National Harbor, Maryland. It was Ms. Roy’s third appearance at the Bee. The third time was definitely the charm for the 14-year-old — for her win, Ms. Roy took home over $40,000 in cash and prizes.
Sukanya Roy correctly spelled the word “cymotrichous” in Round 20 of the Finals to secure the win. Before that, she correctly spelled “persiscii” after second place finisher, Laura Newcombe, missed “sorites” in Round 19 (Ms. Newcombe added a silent “p” to the beginning of her word, making it harder than it actually was). The winner has to not only spell her own word correctly after her last competitor misspells, but she must also correctly spell the next word in the following round. If Ms. Roy had missed the word in Round 20, Ms. Newcombe would be reinstated in the competition, and the rounds would continue. According to the rules, the winner has to win a round on his or her own.
Sukanya Roy took home the following in cash and prizes:
From Scripps, a $30,000 cash prize and an engraved trophy
From Merriam-Webster, a $2,500 U.S. savings bond and a complete reference library
From Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, a $5,000 scholarship
From Encyclopaedia Britannica, $2,600 in reference works and a lifetime membership to Britannica Online Premium
From K12 Inc., an online course and a Nook eReader
Laura Newcombe and the 11 other Championship Finalists did not go home, however, empty-handed. Second place receives $12,500 cash and other prizes; the third place finisher takes home $7,500 cash plus prizes.
Here is the way the Top 13 Championship Finalists finished in the Bee. Spellers who go out in the same round tie for their places in ranking:
1st Place = Sukanya Roy
2nd Place = Laura Newcombe
3rd Place = Tie: Arvind Mahankali and Joanna Ye
5th Place = Dakota Jones
6th Place = Tie: Veronica Penny; Dhivya Sentil Murugan; Sriram Hathwar; and Mashad Arora
10th Place = Tie: Lily Jordan; Nabeel Rahman; and Prakesh Mishra
13th Place = Samuel Estep
Sukanya Roy is the 84th National Spelling Bee Champion. Congratulations to Sukanya Roy, Laura Newcombe, all of the Championship Finalists, Semifinalists, and to this year’s complete roster of 275 national spellers!
